Mercedes A Service
What is Mercedes-Benz Service A?
Mercedes-Benz Service A is the first scheduled maintenance recommended by Mercedes-Benz. While it includes an engine oil and filter service, it's much more than an oil change. Service A is designed to inspect critical vehicle systems, verify proper operation, and keep your Mercedes-Benz operating safely and reliably according to the factory maintenance schedule.

What Does Mercedes-Benz Service A Include?
Service A includes the factory-required maintenance listed for the 1-Year / 10,000-Mile "A" Service.
I only use oils that meet the Mercedes-Benz spec for your vehicle and Filters are either Genuine Mercedes or the OEM equivalent.
Engine oil and filter replacement
Windshield washer fluid top-off
Inspect hood latch, safety catch, and hood hinges
Clean water deflector area
Visual inspection of front and rear brakes
Inspect tires and adjust tire pressures
Reset Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) if required
Reset the maintenance reminder
Additional maintenance items may also be due depending on your vehicle's age, mileage, and factory maintenance schedule.
When is Service A Due?
Your Mercedes-Benz will remind you when Service A is due by displaying a message in the instrument cluster, typically around every 1 year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. You will then see the Service A due message every other year as services alternate between Service A and Service B.
You may see messages such as "Service A Due," "Service A1 Due," or similar service codes. The letter identifies the scheduled maintenance interval, while the number identifies additional maintenance items that may also be due during that visit.
Why Is There So Much Confusion About Mercedes Services?
Over the years, Mercedes-Benz has used several different maintenance reminder systems. Depending on the model year, your vehicle may display one wrench, two wrenches, service letters from A through H, or today's A/B service reminders.
To make things even more confusing, the maintenance schedules themselves have changed over the years.
For example, a 2003 S-Class B Service is not necessarily the same as a 2010 S-Class B Service. In 2003, the S-Class was still using the one- and two-wrench reminder system while the new E-Class had already switched to the A through H service reminders. Around 2009, Mercedes moved to a maintenance schedule based primarily on time and mileage regardless of what was displayed in the instrument cluster. Today's vehicles have returned to a simplified A/B service reminder system, but the required maintenance still depends on your specific vehicle and factory maintenance schedule.
The important thing to remember is this: Your Mercedes-Benz knows when service is due. The instrument cluster tells you when, and the factory maintenance sheet for your specific year and model tells you what should be performed.
Why Doesn't Every Service A Include the Same Items?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about Mercedes-Benz maintenance.
Mercedes-Benz uses a maintenance system that calculates when service is due based on time, mileage, and vehicle operating conditions. The exact maintenance required is determined by the factory maintenance schedule for your specific model and year.
While every Service A includes the basic maintenance items listed above, additional factory-recommended services—such as brake fluid replacement, cabin air filters, spark plugs, transmission service, or engine air filters—become due at specific mileage and time intervals.
That's why two Mercedes-Benz vehicles displaying "Service A Due" may require different maintenance depending on their model year and service history.
Why Is Service A Important?
Routine maintenance is one of the best ways to maximize the reliability and longevity of your Mercedes-Benz.
Service A isn't simply an oil change. It's an opportunity to inspect your vehicle, identify developing problems before they become expensive repairs, and ensure your Mercedes continues to perform the way it was designed.
Following the factory maintenance schedule and using oils that meet the factory specifications also helps preserve the long-term value of your vehicle.
How Long Does Service A Take?
Most Service A appointments take approximately one hour, although additional factory-recommended maintenance items may require extra time.
What's the Difference Between Service A and Service B?
Service B includes everything performed during Service A, along with additional scheduled maintenance such as brake fluid replacement and cabin air filter replacement.
The exact services performed still depend on your vehicle's model year, mileage, and factory maintenance schedule.
